Rain failed to put a damper on the enthusiasm of the Hollywood A-Listers who stepped on to the red carpet at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles for the 86th Academy Awards last Sunday. The glamorous Oscar attendees showed off a stunning number of hair and make-up looks. While sideswept curls were favoured by Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett and Kate Hudson, actresses like Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams, and not to mention the arguable star of the show, Lupita Nyong'o opted to take a bit of a risk.

Your Under the Dryer glam squad shares our best looks from the 2014 Oscars!

LUPITA'S Crowning Glory

It was just a headband, but on her it might as well have been a tiara. The moment style doyenne Lupita Nyong'o set foot on the red carpet we fell in love with her all over again. And while her 'Nairobi blue' Prada gown was absolutely divine, it was her 18-karat yellow gold and diamond headband designed for her by Fred Leighton, that really caught our eye.

Nyong'o — who nabbed the Best Supporting Actress award for her role in 12 Years A Slave — has played with different hairstyles throughout the 2014 awards show season.

This time the star added a few extra inches of height to the top of her cropped do, keeping the hairline shaved super low, and added dazzle with the gem-encrusted headpiece. "Lupita + Cinderella = Lupitarella," said the actress's stylist Micaela Erlanger, who added, "[The headband] was the icing to this gown." Hair accessories didn't seem to be a trend for this season, but Nyong'o may have just set the precedent.

One thing's for sure, we're head over heels for this look. But since the piece was custom-made for Hollywood's new 'It girl', we'd venture to guess it's a tad out of our price range. There is, however, hope of getting the look for less. A Marie Hayden Swarovski headband, for instance, would be a worthy substitute.

KERRY'S ROMANTIC WAVES

Scandal star Kerry Washington's baby bump — draped in custom Jason Wu — wasn't all we noticed as she sauntered into the Dolby Theatre on Sunday evening... her relaxed waves perfectly punctuated the look.

Takisha Sturdivant-Drew, Washington's hairstylist of the last 15 years, recently spilled the beans to the LA Times giving us the breakdown of the look. "I saw the Jason Wu dress and knew right away that she had to have a lot of hair and texture," says Sturdivant-Drew.

"Also, I wanted it to look kind of beachy, because the dress was strapless and skin baring." She prepped Washington's hair by washing it with Neutrogena Triple Repair Shampoo and Conditioner to give her hair shine. She then blowdried Washington's hair with a HairArt blow dryer and Mason Pearson Brush, setting the dryer at medium in order to get volume without straightening the actress's hair.

A HairArt H3000 Heat Brush Pro gave Washington's hair more volume at the roots, and a few flicks from a flat iron to the ends of the hair gave it the piecey, beachy texture the hairstylist was aiming for. "I teased the roots to get an even volume all around," said Sturdivant- Drew. For the romantic half up-half down hairdo, she decided to pull up the top part of the hair in sections, starting with the left, then right, then centre.

"Pulling the hair up separately and creating sections gives me better control," she says. "I pinned it with bobby pins in an X shape, because it pulls the hair tighter." Despite the rain, Sturdivant-Drew didn't use any hair spray or product to shellac the hair into place. "Wavy hair is better in this weather," she says. "Straight hair would have been a problem, but this is great hair weather."

Windblown Chic

One style that seemed to be trending on Sunday was windblown chic. From Portia de Rossi and Chrissy Teigen to Jennifer Lawrence, the hairspray was on thick.

Lawrence and de Rossi in particular made waves with their short hairstyles. The two ladies amped up the volume of their 'dos and swept back their blonde tresses. Lawrence's pixie cut — which made its Oscars debut on Sunday — was styled to the max by celebrity hairstylist Jenny Cho, who created the look using Suave products.

We're loving this look on both these ladies, but we'll let you decide just who wore it best.
